The Atkins diet has recieved a bit of media attention recently, as two new studies have shed some light on the controversial dietary regime made famous by the now-late Dr. Atkins.
Unfortunately, it seems, no one is really sure what direction the light is pointing, what the light really means, or whether or not the light was really just a low-flying UFO.
According to a story on Yahoo! News released at 5:02pm on May 21st, these two studies have shown that the Atkins diet may be no better at helping people lose weight than a traditional low-fat diet is.
According to another story on Yahoo! News, released four hours and fifty-nine minutes later, these two studies have shown that the Atkins diet has a real advantage when compared to a traditional low-fat diet.
You have to wonder about the clarity of a study’s findings when two opposing opinions can be proven in the right by the same exact data.
Of course, you also have to wonder about a news agency’s editorial process when they can publish two contradictory articles within five hours of each other.

Funnily enough, I know four or five people right now that are on Atkins… two at work, a couple at school, one online friend…

sorry this is completely unrelated, but i was wondering if you have one of those spiffy little buttons (like your rss feeds, mt powered, wap enabled etc. buttons) for valid xhtml 1.0. if not, would it be all right if i stole your idea and made one for myself? :D

I don’t have an XHTML button, cause I haven’t bothered to clean up my code enough to make the cut. However, I would check out Steal These Buttons for all your site badge needs before you make one of your own. That site has nearly 400 (at last count) buttons collected already!
If you don’t find one that works, there is an online button maker right here. I just found this site a few seconds ago, so I don’t know how well it works, but it’s a start. Better than pixel-by-pixel editing, I’m sure. :)

I don’t really think either study tells us anything new, although the one-year data is interesting. We have no shortage of short-term dietary studies. It’s the long-term studies that are hard to find. Sure, that’s partly because it’s hard to get people to stick to any diet at all for any length of time, but that’s important information in itself.
Atkins advocates tend to say that it’s easier on people’s health to force their bodies into ketosis than to stay significantly overweight. Problem is, I don’t see any long-term information that says they won’t be doing both.
