So I was hungry, it being lunchtime and all, and I headed up to the vending machine to get myself a bagel. Yes, our vending machine has bagels. Calm yourself. Sliced bagels, even, which I guess trumps the whole ’sliced bread’ thing quite nicely regardless of what you think of our alternative vending lifestyle.
Anyways, I get to the vending machine, and they’re all out of bagels. Well, they had raisin bagels, but for whatever reason those don’t count in my mind. So we’ll say they were out. Again. I had this exact same problem yesterday.
But I’m hungry. I’m not leaving the vending machine empty handed. So I give up and buy myself a nice veggie burger instead. Yeah, we got veggie burgers in our vending machines, too. Now if you don’t sit down and be quiet, I’m going to turn this story around, I swear.
When did this happen? When did I become the sort of person that, first of all, consumes bagels (without the cream cheese… that stuff goes straight to your hips you know) as a well-rounded meal, and second of all, considers veggie burgers an acceptable substitute? Sure, Megan and I had veggie burgers every once in a while when we were living together, but I always thought I was just humoring her. I guess the joke is on me, no? The cow I didn’t eat is spinning in the grave it didn’t need right now. And I’m pretty sure Eric might disown me. He’s a meat-and-potatoes sorta guy who sees the potato part as superfluous. Or at least, he used to be. I dunno if his stomach still accepts carcasses (dead carcasses, at that) as readily.

I recommend Morningstar Farms burgers, they don’t taste at all like “fake meat.” The fajita and pizza burgers are the bestest, they actually have cheese in them. But, you’ll probably never eat them. They’re just way better for you than meat (and of course, potatoes.) They pack a huge fiber and protein punch though, which make ya stay full a long time. (I’ll point out that a bagel is 100% carbs, and carbs turn into sugar within an hour and a half, spiking the blood sugar, thus making you feel queesy, and hungry.) *Steps off of my Weight Watchers and Nutrition soapbox*

sorry you couldn’t find your beloved bagel but i’m beginning to think you should start taking food to work. then you wouldn’t have to rely on the vending machine. and please please please… check the dates on those things. and i can’t believe you ate the veggie burger. that’s the nastiest looking thing in those vending machines. *shudder* hope you’re still alive by tomorrow :P

Yeah, well I’ve been eating meat all my life and I’ve always been thin as a whip. Although, I’ve put ona couple of pounds (five to be precise), but that was after I dropped the potatoes from my diet…
Coincidence, me thinks not. ;p
*makes note to buy potatoes tonight*

Kara, the carbs-immediately-make-you-queasy-and-hungry thing is not universally true of all carbohydrates. Like most things, it depends on the carbohydrates you choose.

Mris, bagels are simple carbohydrates, and as such turn very, very quickly into blood sugar. Complex carbs, such as whole wheats, grains and oatmeal, slowly turn into glucose and will help keep you fuller longer. I didn’t mean to imply that carbs are bad, I’m 100% pro-carb myself. I just meant that a 100% simple carb lunch will make you hungry soon after eating it :)

Where ~did~ I go wrong in rasing you, dear boy?
I won’t disown you, though. You get a reprieve simply based on the fact that, in addition to meat and potatoes (superfluous, but a stomach-filler anyhoo), I’m also a pro-bagel sorta guy (hey, a full bagel will still pacify my hunger pains). Since you eat them, at least that would seem to indicate you’re weening (or have weened) yourself off that ridiculous Atkins diet. ;p
And you’ve recognized that the so-called veggie burgers *shudder* are a problem for you and admission is the first step. ;p
