My Belated Birthday

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I realized I never mentioned it here, but my birthday was Wednesday of last week. Happy belated birthday, self!

In fact, I really ended up with more of a birth-week than a birthday. The festivities started on Sunday evening, with an impromptu boat ride on Saylorville with Klay, Megan, and Amanda on Klay’s boat (lovingly named “Ethyl,” unintentionally named by Yours Truly). We’d spent the day moving friend Sara from her apartment at 3KG (3000 Grand) to her new loft in the East Village. After that we were severely overheated, so the boat ride was a welcome cool-down. We even swam off the back of the boat for a while, which was divine. Afterwards, we headed to Appare for sake and teppanyaki. It was delicious.

Tuesday night, the four of us headed out on the lake again, as Megan and Klay were both going to be out of town for my birthday party proper, and they wanted to celebrate. This time we brought our food with us, and ate dinner on the lake. It was gorgeous watching the sun set over the lake, from the lake.

On Wednesday (day of birth), Amanda and I went out to dinner. We went to Appare again, but this time we stayed on the sushi side of the restaurant. We spent a couple of hours at our table enjoying sushi and martinis, and chatting about anything and everything that came to mind. It was very enjoyable. Amanda got me an iPod Shuffle and a gift certificate to iTunes, so I could listen to tunes while I jogged. It was an awesome gift, and also a hilarious one: that combo is exactly what I got her for her birthday three months ago. :)

Friday night was the night of my birthday party proper. We started the evening at The Lift, a martini bar on 4th street north of Court Avenue. Later in the night we migrated slightly south to the Royal Mile (a British pub), and ended up upstairs at the Red Monk (a Belgian bar). A good number of friends came out for the partying… over a dozen in all, I’d wager. Visitors included: Amanda, Justin, Tigon and Ben Woline, Jason, Daniel and Abbie Shipton, Hannah and Tono, Sara, Lindsay Reinert, Lindsay Rees, Nick, Adam Pirillo, Joe, Lisa, and Tae. And possible one or two others that I’ve forgotten. Amanda and I took a cab home, and I managed to go the entire night without losing anything I’d ingested, and I woke up entirely hangover-free. It was a good start to my 27th year. :)

Saturday night, a bunch of us got back together and headed to the Iowa State Fair for an evening out. I managed to eat both a foot-long corn dog AND a 5-pound turkey leg. Although, after having done so, I questioned my wisdom a bit. :) It was a nice, relaxing evening, and a great way to wrap up my birth-week.

Laundry List

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

the gypsy and iYou know, I’m really starting to think that I need to do laundry more often. I’m supposed to be going on a Christmas-themed pub crawl tonight, weather permitting. I’m going as Jesus on his Birthday — a long robe, sandals, and a birthday hat. But I wanted to wear something warmer underneath the robe since if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Iowa today, it’s a bit chilly (what with the ice storm and all).

So anyway, I was looking for something warm to wear under my robe, but all my white long-sleeved shirts are dirty. So I threw in a load of whites. And then I heaved a heavy ol’ sigh at how little difference that seemed to make to my laundry pile. So next, I think I’ll do a load of greys. And then a load of blacks, one of blues, a set of reds, one of tans, and then maybe a load of miscellaneous just to catch the stragglers.

Or at least, I’ll get as much of those done as I can before it’s time to start dressing up in funny outfits and drinking heavily. Priorities, people.

Also, forgive me the memory-infused photo above. It’s the only photo I have of the robe I’ll be wearing tonight. Also, I think Amanda technically can’t disown me for it, because Dana and I weren’t dating at the time the photo was taken. There’s gotta be a rule in there somewhere for that sort of thing. Sides, I think it’s a cute pic. ;)

Le sigh. Work has been really busy these last couple of weeks, which has really cut down on the time in which I might update here. I’ve even worked through lunch every day this week to make sure my stuff gets done well and on time. Also, I’ve noticed that my workload is usually heavier at the beginning of the week, meaning it’s Thursday or Friday before I ever even get a chance to write. I’ll figure something out.

Big News of Last Week (in no particular order):

First, as some of you have already heard, I might well be buying my parents’ house and moving to Des Moines in the really near future. They’ve decided to downsize a bit, and since they have a house, and I need a house, it seemed pretty logical that I just take theirs. I’m still working on mortgage stuff and so forth, so I suppose it isn’t 100% for sure, but it’s pretty far up there as far as percentages go. I’ll be looking for a roommate, too, so Kara, if you were serious, email me and we’ll talk. ;) Otherwise, I have one or two other prospects I could try to persuade.

I had workFriend Amanda up last Friday and Saturday for a weekend of singin, dancin, drunken fun (singing and dancing came after the drinking, obviously). I had a blast. :) She, Dana, and I (along with Scott on Friday night and Kate on Saturday) pretty well toured Welch Ave, hitting five different bars in the two nights. We also spent Saturday afternoon taking jello shots and watching the CU vs. CSU football game at Dana’s place. I don’t remember who won, but that really isn’t the point.

I went jogging after work twice last week, and I’m going jogging for the second time this week tonight after work. Well, jogging on a treadmill. Milling? I have no idea what it’s called. Regardless, it is hard and I sweat all over the place and usually wish I were somewhere (anywhere) else by about 15 - 20 minutes in. So I must be doing something right. Basically, I decided I was going to need more cardio in my life in order to lose weight, and there’s only so much racquetball can do. And now, if I’m going to be moving to Des Moines, that’s probably going to put a hold on my racquetball playing for a while, so it’s good to have an alternative in the works.

Time to wrap things up here. Keep your stick on the ice.
