Laundry List

the gypsy and iYou know, I’m really starting to think that I need to do laundry more often. I’m supposed to be going on a Christmas-themed pub crawl tonight, weather permitting. I’m going as Jesus on his Birthday — a long robe, sandals, and a birthday hat. But I wanted to wear something warmer underneath the robe since if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Iowa today, it’s a bit chilly (what with the ice storm and all).

So anyway, I was looking for something warm to wear under my robe, but all my white long-sleeved shirts are dirty. So I threw in a load of whites. And then I heaved a heavy ol’ sigh at how little difference that seemed to make to my laundry pile. So next, I think I’ll do a load of greys. And then a load of blacks, one of blues, a set of reds, one of tans, and then maybe a load of miscellaneous just to catch the stragglers.

Or at least, I’ll get as much of those done as I can before it’s time to start dressing up in funny outfits and drinking heavily. Priorities, people.

Also, forgive me the memory-infused photo above. It’s the only photo I have of the robe I’ll be wearing tonight. Also, I think Amanda technically can’t disown me for it, because Dana and I weren’t dating at the time the photo was taken. There’s gotta be a rule in there somewhere for that sort of thing. Sides, I think it’s a cute pic. ;)

Neglecting my site, with good (and bad) reason.

Iowa State University signIt’s a sad but true fact that whenever my life gets busy, and this could really be any sort of busy, my website is the first to feel the effects. If work is busy, then I don’t have time to write articles at work, and I certainly don’t feel like sitting in front of a computer when I get home. If my social life is busy, then I have more things of interest (to some people) to write about, but less time in which to write. It’s a conundrum. And sometimes, I just get distracted by other things in my otherwise ample free time. This week has been a combination of all of these things.

Work has been keeping my nose firmly planted against the grindstone, with a monkey seated between my shoulder blades. Or whatever metaphor you prefer, so long as it makes me really busy and is vaguely surreal. I’ve had a ton of different projects going on at once the last couple of weeks, all of which managed to have a deadline of this Friday. Right before a major holiday. Go figure.

Luckily, there’s my social life to distract me. Tonight, Amanda and I are going to Ames for the ISU football season opener against Kent State, which should be a great time. Friday during the day, I’m a pall bearer in my Great-Uncle Willie’s funereal.* I’m not sure I’d normally consider that a social event, but I’m not sure what other category it should grace instead. Friday night, I’ve gotten a bunch of people to join me on a Clive-based pub crawl from 5pm – 12:30am. This weekend, Amanda and I are planning to paint the office, do a bit of yard work, and enjoy each others’ company (I’ve hardly seen her this week). On Monday, we’re getting up early and driving to Minnesota to visit her family. Tuesday, we’re going to the Damien Rice concert in Minneapolis (thanks for the tip, Monica!). Wednesday is all about the driving of home and the catching of breath before we head back to work on Thursday.

Of course, all of that is in the future. Amanda’s been busy socially this week (I haven’t seen her the last two evenings), but I’ve mostly been haunting the house by my lonesome. Or as lonesome as one gets with two inquisitive cats and a hyperactive dog. So what have I been doing with myself? Well, I’m halfway through book 5 of Harry Potter, if that’s any indication (hint: it’s any indication). I’ll probably get through #5 this weekend, and grab #6 for the Minnesota run. And then, I can finally get on to #7! Go me. For very nerdy values of me.

* My great-uncle Willie died in the night on Tuesday. He was very sick, so I’m going to go ahead and consider it for the best. Sorry to end the article on a downer, but I didn’t like how that information got buried in the middle of that paragraph. :)

I was seeing red. And giant bunnies.

full of holiday cheerSo the Santa Pub Crawl was pretty darn awesome. According to Juice, there were something like 600 people in attendance, which seems pretty plausible. At the first bar, at any rate. We left people behind at every bar we visited. :)

Amanda and I first got our drink on at Sara and Anne’s apartment while they finished getting ready (mmm… Screwdriver goodness). Then we, along with Julie and Chuck, headed to Drink to do so (cheap domestics and vodka tonics ensued). We were there an hour or so before we headed via bus to Paddy’s, which I don’t remember much of. I think they had cheap Long Islands, and I think I had more than one, along with beer from Chuck’s pitcher. Then we headed to 3-Bag, which is pretty much the worst name for a bar ever. Actually, I think it’s called 3rd Base, but nobody ever seems to call it that. They had free Home Team pizza (and more cheep beer, of course). zOMG it’d been a long time since I’d had Home Team. Last but not least, we headed to Wellman’s for more drinky goodness. We ran into Megan and Scotty there, and hung out for a while, since it was the first bar we’d been fortunate enough to get a table at. Eventually, we tired of wearing red and smelling like smoke, so we called a cab and headed out a bit before the bar closed.

Sunday was far more tame by comparison. I spent the afternoon hanging out at Stomping Grounds in Ames, but didn’t get a chance to see any of my favorite Amesians. I had a meeting with a guy about a potential freelance project, and I was hoping to stick around for a while afterwards, but my laptop battery died and I got bored and wandered home. I was also hoping to sneak in a game of racquetball, but Dwight was being unresponsive. Some people’s kids, I tell ya.

So yeah. Weekend = good. I have pictures up here, if you’d like to take a gander. Sadly, now I don’t have anything (that I know of) to look forward to until Wednesday, which has been declared a night out at Taki for sushi and martinis.
